A Plague Tale: Innocence – The main characters in A Plague Tale: Innocence feel real and authentic, and each character has their own well-defined personality. The creators of the game, Asobo Studio had interviews with the media where they said that for every action or every spoken dialogue Amicia does, someone would look critically at it, and then agree, or simply say “No, Amicia won’t do that…”. They have embodied the characters well throughout the game’s progression.

The hardships they faced changed their personalities as they go on, and that makes them feel more authentic as well. Amicia is naïve, protected, and inexperienced in matters of the world at the beginning. You gradually see her personality and demeanor shift throughout the game as she experience more and more hardships and a few good times.

Main Characters

Amicia de Rune
Amícia de Rune
Amicia de Rune is the main protagonist and the eldest child of the de Rune family. She is very protective of her little brother Hugo, often taking on soldiers with her sling, in order to protect him, herself and her friends from the Inquisition. She seems to enjoy spending time with her father more than her mother, but this is probably due to the fact that she rarely sees her mother, who takes care of her little brother, Hugo.
Hugo de Rune
Hugo de Rune
Hugo de Rune is Amicia’s five-year-old brother, and was isolated in his room his entire life as his mother Beatrice attempted to cure the illness with alchemy. Amicia and Hugo are on the run from the Inquisition who believe that there is something special about his blood. He is fascinated by by animals and plants, and would not harm any animal. He has a fond love of different flowers, which he often puts in Amicia’s hair.
Béatrice de Rune
Beatrice de Rune
The children’s parents play a very small active role in the game, but we know that Beatrice de Rune will do anything to cure her son from the illness. She works with Laurentius to find a cure, but at the time the Inquisition came to their estate, a cure was not yet available. From the happenings in Chapter 1, it becomes clear that she will do anything to keep her children safe. In a later part of the game you get to learn that she is a strong-willed woman who would not give in to pressure easily.
Robert de Rune
Robert de Rune
Robert de Rune was a knight in the King’s army, and was a legendary fighter. His feats are known all around and even the Inquisition soldiers talk about his prowess. He now takes care of the lands around the estate and loves to spend as much time with Amicia as he can, but has very little time to do so. In the beginning of the game, he takes Amicia hunting with her sling, and we see some glimpses of his personality. We know that he loves his children, and works hard to support them.
Lord Nicholas
Lord Nicholas
Lord Nicholas is a violent man, and takes great pleasure in killing innocent people. He is Vitalis’ main enforcer. You never see Nicholas’ face, as he always wears his helmet, creating the impression that something ugly is behind the face cover. He is a well-intentio ned extremist in the sense that he strives to put an end to the plague by any means necessary, including weaponizing the rats. He has no qualms about killing children.
Conrad Malfort
Conrad Malfort
Conrad lost his son due to the plague, and is blaming the De Rune family for bringing the rats. He would stop at nothing to avenge his son’s death, including killing Amicia and Hugo, and anyone getting in his way. In the fight against Amica, he claims that he wants to be taken to his wife and child – he is right for the wrong reasons in many ways, as Hugo does (unconsciously so) attract the rats. He actively fights the plague and and kills the sick at the stake.
Vitalis Bénévent
Vitalis Bénévent
Vitalis is the main antagonist, and the leader of the Inquisition. He is the main force behind the people hunting Amicia and Hugo. He messes around with the occult, including having blood transfusions. He has a milky left eye, and appears to be blind in it. He usually speaks calmly, but with a very ominous tone, and loves it when people die. He is the final “boss” of the game, and together with his Albino Rats, he proves quite a challenge to the De Rune children.
Lucas
Lucas
Lucas is a bookworm and an aspiring alchemist under the tutelage of Laurentius, and working with Amicia to help cure her brother. Lucas joined their party after Chapter 4, when Amicia and Hugo were looking for Laurentius to help cure Hugo. Lucas’ hunger for science will play a big role in finding a cure for Hugo. He tends to mutter to himself whenever he is reading alone. Although not really physical, he actively helps Amicia in the game.
Laurentius
Laurentius
Laurentius is Lucas’ mentor and teacher, and is working with Béatrice de Rune to cure her son Hugo. The children are looking for him in Chapter 4 of the game, hoping to get a cure for Hugo’s affliction. It turns out that the Inquisition has already been to his farm, and the children are quickly learning that they will have to think fast and work hard to survive when they learn that Laurentius has been bitten by a rat and is very ill.
Rodrick
Rodric
Rodric is a blacksmith, just like his father used to be. He is very strong, capable of snapping the necks of soldiers with heavy armor, but only if he can taken them by surprise. He is often found ramming into doors to open them, clearing ways for mostly Amicia and Hugo to progress further. Rodric seems to start liking killing the soldiers that are threatening them or otherwise preventing them from doing what they need to do.
Mélie
Mélie
Mélie is a corpse looter, and we first see her and her brother Arthur in Chapter 5 as they are looting corpses on the battle field. She is a runaway who robs corpses, people and soldiers alike to keep her and her brother alive. She is the most temperamental of all the orphans. She is Amicia’s resident lock picker, and she grows friends with Amicia as they clear out the Chateau. She has quite the dirty mouth and swears a lot, and her primary motivation is to make profit from their situation.
Arthur
Arthur
Arthur is Mélie’s brother. They ran away from home due to an abusive father, opting to get by on their own. He expresses his anger vocally and is very stealthy. He helps Mélie and Amicia out in Chapter 6 to get past the Inquisition guards. He always wears his hood, presumably to keep him hidden. Amicia is in awe of Arthur rescuing them, and Mélie says that she should not lose her heart, as Arther is a heartbreaker. He is a redhead like his sister, but a lot less fiery.
Clérvie
Clervie
Not much is known about Clervie. She is an old lady, and in Chapter 2, while the children are running away from the Inquisition, she assist them by taking them into her home for protection. She gives them new clothes, indicating that the clothes belonged to her grand children, who were seemingly of same build and age as Amica and Hugo at one time. She seems to live alone, and without her, the de Rune children probably would’ve died as they ran into a dead end.
Father Thomas
Father Thomas
Father Thomas is the priest if the church where Amicia and Hugo ends up in Chapter 3 of the game. He claims that it is dangerous for the children in the church and that they should leave immediately. The children do not listen, and ask Father Thomas for advice. He tells them very little, probably to protect them, and he appears to be taking them to safely. But they will soon come to a grueling conclusion, realizing that everything has changed, and not for the better.
Cardinal Gauthier
Cardinal Gauthier
Cardinal Gauthier is sent by the Pope to investigate the claims of heresy amongst the Inquisition. He is not a person for pleasantries, as is witnessed by the player when Vitalis welcomes him to the cathedral. He wants to Pope to excommunicate Vitalis due to the latter’s involvement in the occult. In the game you only see Gauthier once, and only from a distance, and this one interaction gives us some insight that he is a devout follower of the Catholic Church.
Lîon
Líon
Lion is Amicia’s dog. In the first chapter of the game, he is made out to be a bit naughty, and Robert de Rune says that he thinks with his stomach, to which Amica mentions that her father (Robert) and Lion have that in common. Amicia hits a hog with a stone from her sling, and Lion goes after it, seemingly disobedient when he does not come back to Amicia. Amicia follows him and calls him, but he does not react. This is where we meet a sinister force for the first time.
Lambert
Lambert
Lambert is one of the De Rune family’s servants. He is very loyal to Beatrice in particular, and helps them to escape from the homestead when they are attempting to flee the Inquisition. He seems to be a kind soul and would do everything in his power to ensure the safety of Beatrice and the children, even put his own life in danger to do so.
